SPORTS

GENERAL

The warm climate in Cyprus lends itself to many outdoor pursuits, as does the cooler weather on the Troodos mountains in the winter.  It is entirely possible during Jan/Feb/Mar to snow ski on Troodos in the morning (45 min drive) and water ski in the afternoon.  It is possible to participate in most outdoor pursuits in Cyprus.

Water Sports

Watersports opportunities abound for windsurfing, paragliding and swimming. Recommended beaches include Geroskipou, Dasoudi and Larnaca (all of which are public beaches). Geroskipou is the town between Paphos and Mandria, approx 5km from Mandria.  Some or all offer full facilities to swimmers and include bars, restaurants and changing rooms.

Sailing, diving, water-skiing and scuba-diving are also available at specific locations. The Cyprus Federation of Underwater Activities, PO Box 21503, 1510 Nicosia (tel: (22) 754 647; fax: (22) 755 246) and Cydive (tel: (22) 693 4271; fax: (22) 693 5307; email: info@cydive.com; ) can provide information on diving facilities.

Snorkelling

Snorkelling is excellent fun in Cyprus and can be practiced at minimal outlay, flippers, mask and snorkel.  The waters are warm and have many small tropical fish.

Fishing can be practised on Cyprus, although a licence needs to obtained from the Department of Fisheries, Aiolou 13, CY 1101, Nicosia (tel: (22) 807 830; fax: (22) 775 955). Licences cost C£3 for each reservoir or C£10 for all reservoirs.

Horse riding

For those who enjoy horse riding and wish to see more of Cyprus from an equine position, there is a horse riding school in Paphos and one at the top of Troodos.  Prices start at about £5 per 30mins.

Snow Skiing

During January to March there is snow skiing available at Mount Olympus on the Troodos mountains, approximately 45 mins from Mandria.  There are 4 lifts and 7 slopes to choose from.
